Stone Surgery

ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy):

ESWL is a form of shock wave therapy in which shock waves are projected from outside the body by a generator and it is used to break the stones into multiple small pieces which will pass by itself in the urine. ESWL requires no hole or incision as it is a completely scarless surgery.

Stones upto 10 mm in the kidney and the upper part of the urinary tube and soft stones can be treated by this method.

This procedure is done  as day care and the patients are discharged on the same day

URS (Ureterorenoscopy):

URS is a form of endoscopic surgery in which a slender endoscope which can be as small as 1.5 mm in diameter is passed into the ureter and the stone is visualized and broken into small fragments either by laser or lithoclast( pneumatic energy) and the stones are completely removed. This is a scarless natural orifice surgery.

Sometimes patients might need a Double j stent which is placed and removed after couple of weeks

This procedure is done  as day care and the patients are discharged on the same day

RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery):

RIRS is a form of endoscopic surgery in which a slender flexible endoscope is passed via the ureter into the kidney and stones are dusted into powder with laser and the fragments are removed by basket.

Stones in the kidney upto 2 cm can be treated by this method .This a  scarless natural orifice surgery .

We have state of the art disposable digital flexible ureteroscopes which  reduces the risk of infection while achieving good stone clearance

Sometimes patients might need a Double j stent which is placed and removed after couple of weeks

This procedure is done  as day care and the patients are discharged on the same day

PCNL (Percutaneous nephrolithotomy):

PCNL is a form of endoscopic surgery in which small  telescope placed through a small puncture in

the back into kidney and the stones are fragmented either by laser /pnematic or ultrasonic energy and the fragments are removed.

It is a minimally invasive procedure.

Sometimes patients might need a small tube in the back from the kidney and a stent  to drain the kidney

The tube in the back can be removed in the same admission and the stent is usually removed after a couple of weeks

Laparoscopic stone surgery:

In the era of endoscopic stone surgery most of the stones can be treated by endoscopic methods

Laproscopy is a form of surgery in which the abdomen is entered through small holes and the kidney is reached and the stones are removed .

Even though this is also a minimally invasive procedure it is more invasive than the endoscopic procedures

The usual indications are:

  • Very large stones not amenable to the endoscopic methods
  • Stones in anomalous kidneys like horse shoe kidney or pelvic ectopic kidney

Removal of stones along with correction for anatomic defects like pyeloplasty, reimplantation etc.
